What Pro Event DJs Play On

If you are hiring a DJ for a wedding, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah or a corporate event, you do not need to know how to mix. But it helps to know what professional event DJs play on, and which questions show you whether a DJ is ready for your day. This guide is written for event hosts by the DJ team at Angels Music Productions, which has produced more than 1,000 events in Los Angeles since 2015.

Quick Answer

  • Most pro event DJs use one of four programs: rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, VirtualDJ or Traktor Pro. All of them are reliable in the right hands.
  • The setup around the software matters more: backup gear, music saved offline, good microphones and a DJ who knows your timeline.
  • Want video, a slideshow or karaoke? Ask for a DJ who can play video. VirtualDJ is the common choice for that.
  • Using the venue’s club gear? rekordbox with Pioneer CDJs is the standard.

The DJ Software Pro Event DJs Use

rekordbox (AlphaTheta, Pioneer DJ)

The standard in clubs. You prepare your music in rekordbox, then play from USB on the CDJs found in most clubs and many venues. It also runs Pioneer DJ controllers, has stem separation, and can sync your library across computers in the cloud. Best if you play club gear or want your prep to work on any booth you walk into.

Serato DJ Pro

The favorite of scratch, hip hop and open format DJs. It is known for being stable and simple, works with a long list of controllers, and supports DVS, so you can control digital music with real turntables and vinyl. It has built in stems for live acapellas and instrumentals.

VirtualDJ

Very popular with mobile and event DJs. It mixes video as easily as audio, has karaoke tools, and works with almost any controller. Its real time stem separation is strong. If you play events where you also show a slideshow, music videos or karaoke, it is hard to beat.

Traktor Pro 4

Built for creative electronic sets, with a deep effects engine, remix decks and built in stem separation. It pairs best with Native Instruments controllers.

Engine DJ

The software inside Denon DJ standalone players and some Numark units. You prepare music on your computer, then play with no laptop. Many models can stream from music services over Wi Fi.

What Matters Most at a Wedding or Event

  • Stability over features. At a wedding there is no second chance. A good event DJ plays on a setup tested at many gigs and does not update software the week of your event.
  • Music saved offline. Streaming is useful, but venue Wi Fi fails. Every key song should be on the computer and on a backup drive.
  • A backup ready to play. A second laptop or a USB ready for another player can save the night.
  • The mic and the timeline, not just the mix. Entrances, speeches and special dances matter more than tricks.

What Our DJs Bring to Every Event

Every Angels Music DJ brings backup gear: a laptop, mixer, speakers, microphone, cables and connectors. If a DJ cannot perform, we send a substitute DJ or give a refund. If your venue or performer wants club standard gear, we also rent the Pioneer CDJ-3000 and the Pioneer DJM-900 Nexus mixer.

Questions to Ask Your DJ About Their Setup

  • What do you play on, and for how long? A DJ who has played many events on the same setup is a safer choice than one who just switched.
  • What happens if your laptop fails? The answer should be a backup that is ready to go, not a long restart.
  • Is all of my music saved offline? Do not count on venue Wi Fi.
  • Can you play video, a slideshow or karaoke? Only some setups can.
  • Which microphones do you bring? Speeches and toasts depend on them.
  • How much setup time and power do you need? For a full production we plan 4 to 6 hours of setup and ask for at least 2 grounded 110V 20A outlets.
