The 10 Best Special Effects for Weddings and Events
Lighting changes the whole room more than any other effect. Uplighting colors the walls in your wedding colors, pin spots make the centerpieces glow, moving heads add energy on the dance floor, and a truss light bridge over the floor turns the party into a concert. Most couples keep soft, warm light for dinner and switch to bright, moving color when the dancing starts.

Low lying fog stays close to the floor and makes it look like you are dancing on a cloud. It is the most requested effect for the first dance, and it looks amazing in photos and video. Our low lying fog machine is water based and rents from $399.
Tip: time the fog to start about 20 seconds before your song, so the cloud is full when you step onto the floor.
Cold spark machines shoot a fountain of sparks that are cool to the touch, so they work indoors and look incredible for the grand entrance, the first dance or the last song of the night. Confetti blasts are the easiest way to mark a big moment, like the couple’s entrance or the drop of a favorite song.

6. Laser Funnel Effect
A laser funnel wraps the couple in a moving tunnel of light during the first dance, and it looks even better with low lying fog. Our laser funnel rents from $799. For the partylaser light shows can project beams, text and animated logos.

Popular Special Effect Combos
Effects look even better together. These are the combos couples ask us for most:
Dancing on a cloud. Low lying fog on the floor with cold sparks around the couple. The classic first dance look.
Laser ring with haze. A laser funnel with a light haze so every beam shows. It wraps the couple in light during the first dance.
Color columns and bubbles. Vertical LED fog machines shooting columns of colored fog, with a fog bubble machine filling the air. Fun and playful, great for the party or a teen crowd.
The big entrance. CO2 jets and confetti blasts the second the couple walks in. It gets every guest on their feet and starts the party.
Dry Ice vs Low Lying Fog Machine
There are two ways to make fog that stays on the floor:
Dry ice. Frozen CO2 dropped into hot water makes a very thick, rolling cloud for a few minutes per load. It is great for one big moment, but it needs careful handling and a fresh load for every use.
Low lying fog machine. A machine that cools water based fog so it hugs the floor. It is cleaner, easier to control and can be used again and again through the night. This is what we use for most weddings, with our low lying fog machine from $399.
Either way, keep the fog below knee height. Too much fog hides shoes and steps, and guests can trip.
Cold Sparks: What They Are and How to Use Them Safely
Cold spark machines are often called “cold pyro,” but they are not fireworks. The machine heats a small amount of metal granules and blows them out as a fountain of sparks. There is no open flame and very little smoke, and the sparks cool quickly as they fall, which is why they are approved for many indoor venues.
Where cold sparks work best
- Grand entrance: a pair of machines on each side of the doorway or the dance floor.
- First dance or last dance: a short burst on a big moment in the song, often with low lying fog on the floor.
- Cake cutting and the exit: a quick fountain behind the couple makes a strong photo.
- Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and Sweet 16s: the entrance of the guest of honor or the candle lighting finale.
Venue rules to check first
- Ask whether the venue allows cold sparks at all, and in which rooms.
- Ask whether they need advance notice, a certificate of insurance or approval from the fire marshal. Some cities and venues require a permit for special effects.
- Check ceiling height, sprinklers and smoke detectors near where the machines will sit.
- Ask about outdoor use. Wind changes how the sparks fall, so outdoor setups need more space.
Safety basics
- Keep a clear zone around each machine and never place it under low ceilings, drapes, balloons or hanging decor.
- Keep veils, long dresses and guests out of the spark zone. Mark it on the floor if needed.
- Set the machines on a flat, stable surface and run cables where nobody can trip.
- Have a trained technician run the effect and time it with the DJ, so it fires only on cue.
CO2 Entrance Tips
CO2 cannons and handheld CO2 guns shoot short, loud blasts of cold white vapor that look great on video. They are a favorite for the couple’s entrance and for the peak of the party.
- Time it to the music: fire on the drop of the entrance song, right as the couple steps through the door.
- Keep blasts short: a few quick bursts make more impact than one long blast, and the vapor clears fast.
- Aim up, never at faces: point cannons up and away from guests, and keep handheld guns above the crowd.
- Mind the room size: in small or enclosed rooms, keep the number of blasts low and make sure there is airflow.
